Plays can be written by a single artist, but musicals are one of the most complex theatrical forms to create because they rely on many different layers of collaboration between a small army of artists. A standard musical requires a playwright to write the book, a composer the music, a lyricist for the lyrics, and arranger for the score. To go from page to stage can take years of development, as each piece of the musical puzzle is finally perfected and put together. The average development time for a musical that is produced on Broadway is ten years and costs tens of thousands of dollars for developmental readings, numerous workshops, concert readings, and workshop productions. It is practically impossible for a single team of writer/composer to afford the development process and ultimate production without assistance from theatres, producers or donors.
